Lust, Loathing and a Little Lip Gloss by Kyra Davis

Kyra Davis is a fictional writer who was born in Santa Clara, California. She published her first book “Sex, Murder and a Double Latte” and signed a three book deal. Lust, Loathing and a Little Lip Gloss is the fourth book in the series.

The series follows mystery author Sophie Katz, who tries to solve mysteries in her own life. In Lust Loathing and a Little Lip Gloss, Sophie falls in love with a three bedroom old Victorian home because she can no longer stand the complete lack of parking near her apartment. The only problem she can see with this stunningly beautiful home? The realtor is her slimy ex husband, the seller of the house is a rich, creepy guy who wants her to join San Francisco’s Specter Society, a social group that meets weekly to discuss ghosts and hold séances. Oh, and finally, when she goes on her first walk through of the house, she walks in a room to find a lifeless body holding something that has a very interesting history. Reluctantly, Sophie decides she cannot walk away from this house and will go along with the Specter Society so that she is able to keep the house.

When Sophie doesn't things can get any stranger, a Specter Society member is found with a slashed throat, and Sophie's house is sending her signs for her to leave. Sophie hears footsteps in the middle of the night, the lights will turn on and off without her or anyone she knows of doing it, and to top it off, things that have been placed around her brand new home are found in different spots unexplainably. The worst part of it all is, her on again off again, sometimes live in boyfriend, the super dark and handsome/P.I, Anatoly thinks that it is all in Sophie’s head.

While people Sophie has been in contact with keep turning up dead, Sophie becomes sure of herself that whoever is messing with her house is the same person responsible for the deaths. So Sophie, once again, goes on a hunt for the killer.

Kyra Davis is an exceptional writer, I have read every one of the Sophie Katz novels and they have not disappointed, what I like about Kyra’s writing is that it takes two completely separate genres and pushes them together to create something incredible. There is the murder mystery that is tied in with the standard Chick Lit theme, and at first I was a little sceptical, but when I opened the book I couldn’t put it down!

The overall story line is interesting and keeps you glued to the story, I think the only downfall to this story is the on again off again relationship with Anatoly and Sophie , it can get a little annoying and repetitive if you have read every book. However that’s only my opinion. The best thing about not only this book, but the series in general; you don’t have to read them all, or in order to understand everything. Yes, there will be a few things you’ll miss out on, but it catches you up and I don’t find that it matters that much. Some may disagree.

Kyra Davis is an amazing writer and I cannot wait to read more of her books.

Overall Rating: A

It Would Be Funny...If IT Wasn't My Life is Canadian born, Lisa Dow's first novel.
Kathryn (Kit) Jennings is a 31 year-old, single woman living in Toronto with her best friend Mel Melrose. Kit has had a tough time with love, relationships and men in general and has finally given up on finding Mr. Right. The only she can think of protecting herself and her heart from being broken again is "Sex with the Single Ex".

While Mel is acquiring a lavish collection of new boots and handbags, Kit is drowning under a mess of men. Marc; the construction worker, who absolutely adores Kit from the moment he meets her. Derek, the investment banker. He breaks Kit`s heart right after he sweeps her off her feet, only to want her back again. Then there’s Rob, the bike courier. While dating Kit "exclusively", he sleeps with every woman on his route. Finally there is Kevin, the rock star of an up and coming band, who really wants to get to know Kit better before she runs off with someone else.

After breaking her leg, Kit has to not only deal with the new house that her and Mel just bought and have to fix up, her and Mel`s parents coming for a visit, but Kits most challenging problem of her roller coaster of a love life. So with a wine glass and After Eights in hand Kit winds up with four stunning rings, three of which came with marriage proposals attached. Kit has to choose between Marc; who said they shouldn`t date because dating could lead to breaking up. Derek, who dumped Kit for the "Undersexed Ditzy Debutante" and now wants her back. Or Rob, who seems to have his life on track, but Kit can`t get over the fact that he cheated on her. Then there`s Kevin; his ring didn`t come with a marriage proposal, his high school class ring just came with hope for a future to try and get to know each other.

Mel decides to help Kit figure out whom to decline and accept proposals from. In the end, Kit decides to sadly decline proposals from Rob and Marc, while happily declining Derek`s offer with a huge, yet silent "Hell No! ". As for Kevin`s class ring, it`s hanging off of Kit`s twenty-inch box-link chain around her neck.

Lisa Dow is a great author, and has demonstrated that with her first novel. It Would Be Funny... is a funny, light read that you won`t want to put down until you are finished (it only took me two and a half hours!). Lisa is currently working on her second novel "With Her Boots On", With Her Boots On will focus on the story of Mel Melrose (and Kit).

The style of Lisa`s writing is what makes this book so good. She looks at the situations from a new angle. All the characters that she writes in have a history and blend well into the story. Her writing is fresh and it helps the books progress. When reading, it feels like you are sitting there with Kit and Mel trying to help them figure out who Kit should marry! Well Done!

Overall Rating: A+

Next Weeks Book: Undecided at the moment.

Im Yours - Jason Mraz

LA Candy by Lauren Conrad

Drama? Definitely. Backstabbing friend’s? Check. Free designer clothes with all the perks of being a new, hot, reality TV star? Of course.

Jane Roberts is a nineteen year-old girl from Santa Barbra moving to L.A for an internship at Fiona Chen events. She’s with her best friend Scarlett, she is attending USC while they live in a house nearby. Both are beautiful and are new to L.A, they don’t know anyone, they have an out-of-town look that screams “I’m not from here”. While out for a night on the town to welcome Scarlett and herself to the new city, they get spotted at a club by Trevor Lord, who works for PopTV as a producer. Trevor pitched his new idea for a reality/documentary show called “LA Candy” where they would follow the girls around filming them to showcase the life of L.A girls. “A reality version of Sex in the City” Jane and Scarlett (who was practically dragged) went to the audition at the PopTV studios to do the interview.

Satisfied with the “vibe” from Jane and Scarlett, he called them back to say that they were on the show. Scarlett was a little sceptical at first, Jane is thrilled. Calling all her friends and family to tell them she’s going to be famous! Scarlett finally comes to terms with the whole idea after PopTV is unsatisfied with there house and moves them into a new L.A house complete with everything they need. On their first night out of filming, Jane and Scarlett meet the two other girls that will be on “LA Candy” with them, Madison and Gaby. Madison and Gaby act friendly on camera, and sometimes off, while Jane believes they are her new best friend, Scarlett senses that something is up and is determined to help Jane realize they aren’t as nice as they seem. Madison only wants one thing, to upstage Jane. Gaby (her side-kick) does everything she can to help, as helpless as she is herself.

When boys and relationships get mixed in with the girl’s new reality TV life, they begin to find it difficult to figure out who is in it for the relationship and who is in it for the fame. When Madison finally discovers a way to knock Jane off her pedestal, she plots her revenge to make sure that not only is Jane’s love life destroyed, but so is her career and her reputation.

Lauren Conrad’s LA Candy is known for being the story of Laguna Beach and The Hills. She also just finished a second book, the sequel to LA Candy, Sweet Little Lies. LA Candy also just received a movie deal, using the director from the Twilight Saga.
Overall Rating: B-
Lauren’s writing is surprisingly good, having not followed Laguna Beach and The Hills, I don’t know the entire story. I do think that this was a good read and also a very quick and effortless read. If your bored out of your mind and too lazy to actually focus on something that can say more than “OMG WTF?!?!” this is that book.

Will I read the sequel? I’m not sure.

Next Weeks Book: It’s up to you guys! I’m leaning towards “It Would Be Funny if it Wasn’t My Life”, but vote!

Train - Hey Soul Sister (Lyrics)

Every week I will post a new song to listen to while you read my weekly book review!!

One Fifth Avenue by Candace Bushnell

One Fifth Avenue is one of many novels written by Candace Bushnell. One Fifth focuses on the stories of five women living in the building.

Mindy Gooch

Mindy Gooch, wife to an award winning author James, mother to a thirteen year-old computer wiz Sam, and an all around control freak. When things Mindy wants don't go her way she will stop at nothing to try and change it.

Enid Merle

Enid Merle, the 82 year-old second cousin (but more like an aunt) to the famous screenplay writer Phillip Oakland. Enid is grieving the loss of her late friend Louise Houghton in a very Upper East Side manner. As for Phillip, Enid only wants the best for him and is not afraid to tell the girls leaving his apartment what she really thinks of them.

Lola Fabrikant

Lola Fabrikant (doesn't her name just spell TROUBLE?), a beautiful (on the outside) twenty-something who knows exactly what she wants out of life (Fame and Wealth, yeah..she's that shallow), the only problem for Lola? She doesn't have the slightest idea how to get it. After she lands a job as Phillip Oaklands researcher, sleeps with him and "falls" for him, Phillip sends her packing. She then goes on to have a steamy affair with James, Mindy Gooch's husband and gets a job writing a sex column about her "experiences" with both James and Phillip, after she of course plots a fake pregnancy to try to get Phillip back.

Annalisa Rice

Annalisa Rice, wife to Paul Rice (their millionaires by the way). As a lawyer herself, they are the newest couple to live at One Fifth. New to New York they buy the late Mrs. Houghton's apartment which causes a commotion for Mindy, as she had her own plans for the apartment. Little do Annalisa and Paul know, Mindy will do anything to make their life at One Fifth a nightmare until she gets her way.

Schiffer Diamond

Schiffer Diamond, a movie star who has had a past with Phillip Oakland (he really gets around). When Schiffer returns to One Fifth, Lola sees her as a threat. Though in the end Phillip realizes he has loved Schiffer all along....blah blah blah...tosses Lola out (YAY!) and all is good..Schiffer wins!

Candace Bushnell does and excellent job of giving her characters depth. Personally I give it a 5 out of 5. Thanks to the realistic tie-ins of locations around New York, plus the well written history of the buildings past residents, Bushnell created a realistic novel perfect for a summer beach read. Bushnell is known for her talent for writing with her previous novels being put on T.V (Sex in the City, Lipstick Jungle) and having Sex in the City made into a movie (with the sequel due out May 27th). One Fifth Avenue is just another well written "Chick Lit" novel.

The only real question to consider is what makes this book stand out among the rest? Hundreds of "Chick Lit" novels are on the shelves. Candace however, has the upper hand. She dominates the 20- late 40's demographic due to her several novels and her two T.V series and a movie under her belt.

Whats next for Candace? Well if dominating the fiction section wasn't enough, she is debuting a new novel for teens: "The Carrie Diaries". The Carrie Diaries features Sex in the City's Carrie, before the City was so Sexy.

This Books Grade: A+
